Feeding the Homeless | Catered and Caring
Publisher’s note:
The following article is a contribution to 4BRANT by Luvern Mornin as a Citizen Journalist. Ms. Mornin has devoted months to her passion and advocacy in helping homeless people in Brantford. Thank you for your empathy and dedication to your cause Luvern.
We have a new free dinner offered in Brantford that’s feeding our homeless and less fortunate population.
Left to right: Chris, Sherri, Anthony, Stephanie, Marg, Dave, Jefferson, and Pat.
The location, off Murray Street, is St.Mary’s Parish Hall on East Avenue, through the grey double doors.
Every Friday afternoon it opens from 3:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The dinners are organized and coordinated by a woman who wishes to remain nameless, but the group of volunteers are members of the Facebook group Diane’s Devotion To Helping Homeless.
Simply come in and you’ll be greeted by a volunteer who will explain how the evening works. Next, you get to enjoy conversation and some snacks until your dinner is ready. A short prayer is given in thanks when the food is about to be served. After everyone has eaten, tables are opened for everyone to view and take from the generous donations available. Volunteer help you find what you’re looking for: clothing; hygiene products; shoes; blankets; hats; gloves; children’s items; and a wide variety of other things.
The first dinner, February 8th, 2019, had 63 people attending and they enjoyed their catered meal from Jo-Jo’s Chicken. Chicken wings, pizza, lasagna, and perfectly tasty birthday cake donated by Sobey’s.
The second dinner, Friday, February 15th, had 85 people attending as they devoured the pasta, chicken, rice, a small salad, and ice cream for dessert. The restaurant that catered this meal, and the people who donated the ice cream, preferred to remain anonymous.
Literature, provided by the Church and the City, is easily available to assist those who need it.
The messages shared are clear and positive, “You are loved.” “Be Kind.” “You are handsome.” “Keep moving forward.” “You are beautiful.”
Please help spread the news about this caring contribution to those in need.
It’s truly a wonderful evening of people coming together and helping each other.
Well done Brantford…well done.
