CENTRAL ELGIN, ONTARIO – In a daring early morning heist, thieves targeted the Belmont Golf Club and made off with thirteen golf carts worth approximately $100,000. The incident has left the area shaken, and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are now seeking the public’s help in apprehending the culprits.
The shocking theft was discovered by the club’s superintendent, who noticed a chaotic scene on the golf course as she began her morning shift around 4 a.m. on Tuesday. Operations manager, Emily Bader, recounted the unsettling sight, with golf carts scattered all over the property. At first, they suspected some drunken joyriders were responsible for the mayhem, but soon realized that thirteen golf carts were missing.
The Elgin OPP was alerted and determined that the theft had occurred overnight when the perpetrators entered the golf course premises and specifically targeted the new and higher-value EZgo brand gas-powered golf carts. These carts, with an average weight of 742 lbs (356 kg), were likely stolen for their resale value.
The lack of video surveillance on the premises also makes it challenging to identify the thieves and how exactly they were able to transport the carts, however, the club plans to implement heightened security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The $100,000 loss comes as a severe blow to the Belmont Golf Club, impacting their revenue significantly with fewer golf carts for rental. The club risks losing customers who are unable to walk the course or prefer the convenience of using carts during their rounds.

This theft is not an isolated incident in the region. Other golf clubs in Southwestern Ontario have  fallen victim to similar crimes. A few weeks ago, seven golf carts were reported stolen from Fescue’s Edge Golf Club in Brant County, and two carts were stolen from Delhi Golf and Country Club. Authorities are investigating these incidents, but no charges have been announced yet.
